The Southport and Oak Island NC area has an abundant amount of fun things to do throughout the year – many of which are FREE! Of course, our favorite free thing to do is visit the 14 miles of beautiful area beaches – whether for a sunrise or sunset stroll, a family day at the beach building sandcastles and swimming or just to catch up on a favorite book and relax – the beach is open year-round! Take a self-guided walking tour through the historic fishing village of Southport NC. Start your tour at the Southport Visitors Center at Ft. Johnston where you can pick up a walking tour map to guide you to the many fascinating places around town such as The Old Brunswick Jail, Old Smithville Burial Grounds and churches and homes dating back to the 1800’s.
The lighthouse grounds are open year round for viewing and picture taking with limited 30-minute parking provided at the base of the tower from sunrise until sunset. There are two types of inside tours – a Top Tour and 2nd Level Tour. On theTop Tour visitors can climb the 131 stairs to the top (you need a reservation!) and partake in a breathtaking bird’s eye view of Caswell Beach, Oak Island and Bald Head Island.
From May through September both Southport and Oak Island feature an outdoor summer concert and movie series. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and coolers and enjoy great local bands and blockbuster family movies under the stars. This is great family fun!!
Southport NC is steeped in maritime history and The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport tells the story of the Cape Fear region’s people and their relationship to the water. Her past is a story of exploration, piracy and commerce; of pilotage, salvage and fishing at the crossroads of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a fascinating museum for people of ALL ages!
There is nothing more fun than spending a few hours crabbing – kids from 1 to 100 delight in pulling in the biggest catch. With just a few inexpensive items (no license needed), you can be catching dinner and making memories. Oak Island has plenty of waterway access points and two prime crabbing spots at Heron Lookout (SE 40th Street at Davis Creek) and the 78th Street Crab Dock (NE 78th Street at Yacht Drive).
