We’ve got special events throughout the year that highlight a variety of holidays, national observances and just plain fun! Of course, we are most well-known in these parts for hosting the North Carolina 4th of July Festival in Southport NC each year. It is the largest 4th of July celebration in the state and there are great activities and entertainment for the entire week. Book your Oak Island rental now because that week fills up fast! But don’t worry, if you can’t see us in July, there is still plenty going on all year long!

FIRST FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH ALL YEAR
First Friday Gallery Walk / Downtown Southport / 5pm-7pm
The public is invited to browse and shop the latest creations of area artists. Wine and appetizers start the walk off at the Franklin Square Gallery then on to Art @ 211, Ricky Evans Gallery, Howe Outrageous, Lantana’s Gallery and Southport’s Silver Coast Winery and Gallery. Enjoy live music along the way!

EVERY MONDAY FROM MAY 19th to SEP 8th
Oak Island Farmer’s Market / Middleton Park Extension at 49th St. / 7am-1pm
The Oak Island Farmer’s Market features handmade and homegrown products from local farmers and artists. Pick up the freshest fruits, vegetables and local honey every Monday!

EVERY WEDNESDAY FROM MAY 7th to SEP 24th
Southport Waterfront Market / Garrison Lawn, Southport / 8am-1pm
You can browse the beautiful local produce, baked goods and handcrafted items spread under ancient live oak trees. There is a breeze off the river as well as music in the air as entertainment is always available.

AUGUST 2nd to SEP 13th, 2014
Blackbeard Queen Anne’s Revenge Exhibit / Brunswick Town / 9am-4pm
This is a traveling exhibit for adults and children and is only here for a limited time. The wreck was discovered off Beaufort Inlet in 1996 and artifacts in the exhibit include shoe buckles, cannons, glassware, ceramics and much more!

AUGUST 22-24th, 2014
Phlock To the Beach Buffett Style Beach Bash / Southport – Oak Island Area
Dress like a Parrot Head and enjoy a ‘Buffett’ style beach bash starting with a Pub & Grub Crawl Firday night. Continue the party on Saturday with beach volleyball and Bocce ball tournaments, concerts, free contests for adults and children alike. So much food and fun there’s something for everyone!

Oak Island Labor Day Surf-Off / Ocean Crest Pier, Oak Island / 8am-until
All level of surfers compete in this annual event in various categories such as shortboard, longboard, womens, seniors and guppies. There is also a bodyboard competition!

Oak Island Art Guild Annual Arts & Craft Festival / Middleton Park, 49th St. / 9am-4pm
Come see over 140 vendors selling their beautiful handmade items. There will also be food vendors and fun activities.

AUGUST 31st, 2014
Go Jump In The Lake 5K and 1.5 Mile Fun Run / BSL Park / 8am-until
This is a great race for those just starting out or experienced runners/walkers. The 5k and 1.5 mile fun run courses through scenic BSL and starts and ends at BSL Park.

SEPTEMBER 1st, 2014
Children’s Crab Derby / Old Yacht Basin Pier / Southport / 8:30am-Noon
Children through age 15 can compete in the crab derby the old fashioned way…with a chicken neck and a crab line! Prizes are offered for most crabs caught and largest crab.

SEPTEMBER 6th, 2014
Big Toy Day / Cape Fear Regional Jetport / Southport / 11am-3pm
There is so much to see and do at Big Toy Day – for kids of ALL ages. Kids can see and touch and ride firetrucks, construction vehicles, NASCAR vehicles, helicopters and much more. There is also camel and pony rides and petting zoo and food vendors.

Paws in the Park Strut Your Mutt / Middleton Park / OKI / 12p-4p
Proceeds benefit SOAR (Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue) – contests for pups with prizes awarded for largest dog, smallest dog, best trick and much more. There are door prizes for humans too!

SEPTEMBER 19th, 2014
Concerts on the Coast / Garrison Lawn / Southport / 6pm-7:30pm
Enjoy rock and beach music with “Kicking Aces” overlooking the beautiful Southport waterfront. Bring a blanket, a picnic and be ready to boogie! Admission is free!

SEPTEMBER 20th, 2014
Battle of the Paddles / Boiling Spring Lakes, Pine Road / 9am-until
Have fun in this kayak fundraiser held by the BSL Fire Auxillary to benefit the fire department equipment fund. The event includes a poker run with prizes and the first 25 registrants get a free t-shirt.

5th Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show / Old Yacht Basin / 10am-4pm
This festival grows in popularity each year – see beautiful wooden boats, enjoy nautical themed arts, crafts and demonstrations, kids events and seafood chowder cook-off.

An Evening of Chocolate Decadence Gala / St. James Community Bldg / 5:30p
A gala to benefit Waves4Kids  includes chocolate desserts and appetizers from area restaurants, bakeries and caterers as well as a silent/live auction and music and dancing by Jackie Gore.

OCTOBER 2-4th, 2014
Annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament / Southport Marina
Come down for the biggest fishing event of the year, whether you’re entering to win or just want to watch- there’s plenty to do for everyone! Admission is free for spectators. Visit the US Open King Mackerel Tournament webpage for more details.

DECEMBER 6th, 2014
Christmas by the Sea Parade / Oak Island Drive / 2pm
Oak Island’s Christmas by the Sea Parade is annual tradition for locals and visitors a like. Enjoy beautiful parade floats, local celebrities and of course the clowns.

Southport Christmas Flotilla / Southport Riverfront / 7pm-9pm
Stroll along the historic river-front and view the beautifully lit and decorated boats as they drift along. It is a truly spectacular sight that the entire family will enjoy.
