Throughout the year, Southport and Oak Island highlight a variety of holidays and national observations (as well as the importance of just plain fun with your neighbors) with special events. The most well-known of these events would have to be the North Carolina 4th of July Festival in Southport. This annual event is the largest 4th of July celebration in the state with various activities and entertainment planned locally for the entire week. (If you haven’t booked your stay for that week, you may want to do so as that week’s rentals fill up fast! On the other hand, don’t worry if you can’t make it to Oak Island in July as there are plenty of events happening all year long.) Be sure to check this page regularly as we will continue to update with event information as it is made available.

ON-GOING EVENTS

EVERY MONDAY & WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH
Oak Island VFW Bingo | 103 SE 50th Street | Oak Island | 6:30pm to 10:30pm

EVERY MONDAY OF EACH MONTH, MAY 22ND TO SEPTEMBER 4TH
Oak Island Farmers & Artisans’ Market | Middleton Park Extension | 46th & Dolphin Drive | Oak Island | 8am to 1pm
Take a stroll through the Oak Island Farmers & Artisans’ Market located on the soccer fields just behind Town Hall. Vendors offering local fresh produce, homemade jams, cakes, jewelry, furniture, rugs and potholders among other items are available for purchase. Enjoy the view along the Cape Fear River from the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn while browsing beautiful local produce, baked goods and handcrafted items from various local vendors. The breeze from the river is always lovely and music is in the air as entertainment is always possible. The market is closed July 5th in observance of July 4th activities.

Join fellow history buffs for an evening of educational discussion about North Carolina’s maritime history. Topics vary from month to month.

Oak Island Art Guild Arts & Crafts Festival| 4601 E Oak Island Drive | Oak Island | 10am to 4pm
Take your crew down to the Middleton Park Extension Soccer Field for the 28th Annual Oak Island Art Guild Arts & Crafts Festival. Guests may stroll through the event where there will be more than 100 arts and crafts vendors as well as festival foods. This event is free and offers plenty of parking for those large groups!

SEPTEMBER 9TH
Lions Centennial Car Show | 4136 Southport-Supply Road | St. James | 10am to 4pm
The Southport Lions Club will hold their Centennial Car Show at the St. James Community Center. This fundraising event will assist the Club in their efforts to buy a “Spot” Vision Screener which will assist them with their vision screening activities in the community. This event is open to all cars, trucks and motorcycles with gates opening at 9am. The rain date for this event will be September 10th.

Kids of all ages enjoy this annual event presented by the Kiwanis Club of Southport/Oak Island. Collect your “crew” and head down to the Cape Fear Jetport for a day of experiencing all things “big toy” including fire trucks, 18-wheelers, construction vehicles, speed boats, and race cars. Celebrate the International Day of Peace with Peace Day Southport. This fourth annual event will be held at Franklin Square Park. Following an opening ceremony, the public can enjoy peace songs, dances, children’s crafts and educational literature. This event is free and open to the public. Scurvy Dogs & Scoundrels: Pirates of the Lower Cape Fear | 203 E Bay St | 10am to 4pm
Join the NC Maritime Museum at Southport and the Devil Men of the Cape Fear on the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn as they commemorate the scurvy dogs who terrorized commerce and left an indelible mark on the imaginations of people for generations.

SEPTEMBER 30TH
Southport Wooden Boat Show | 107 Yacht Basin Drive | Southport | 10am to 4pm
Grab your favorite boat enthusiast and head down to the Southport Waterfront for this popular event! View boats displayed in and around the Old Yacht Basin while meeting wooden boat makers and owners. Cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award. Don’t forget your little sailors who will have the opportunity to build their own boat. This event includes exhibits from the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher as well as The Fort Fisher Underwater Archeology Branch.
