From May through September, sea turtles return to Caswell Beach and Oak Island beaches to nest—a special annual event that draws attention from conservationists, residents, and visitors alike. If you're planning a summer trip to the area, witnessing sea turtle activity is a unique and memorable experience. Here's what you need to know about North Carolina's sea turtle nesting season and how you can help protect these endangered species.

When Is Sea Turtle Nesting Season in North Carolina?

Sea turtle nesting season typically runs from early to mid-May through September. During this time, female sea turtles come ashore at night to dig nests and lay their eggs. Around 60 days later, tiny hatchlings emerge and make their way to the ocean.

The beaches of Oak Island and Caswell Beach are especially active during this time and are carefully monitored by local conservation groups.

How to Help Protect Sea Turtles on Oak Island

Whether you're a resident or vacationer, you play a role in helping sea turtles thrive. Here’s how you can do your part:

  • Turn off beachfront lights at night. Use blackout curtains or blinds to prevent indoor lighting from disorienting turtles.

  • Keep your distance. If you see a turtle nesting or hatchlings emerging, stay at least 20 feet away and observe quietly.

  • Avoid flashlights and flash photography. Light can disturb nesting mothers and confuse hatchlings.

  • Remove beach gear and trash. Always take down umbrellas, canopies, chairs, and nets. Leave nothing behind.

  • Fill in holes and flatten sand. Holes and uneven sand can trap hatchlings or nesting females.

  • Stay off the dunes. Dunes are protected natural areas essential to turtle nesting.
