Those who’ve had the pleasure of meeting Missy Ronquillo, owner of Pescado Y Amor, would characterize her as a bubbly, outgoing personality with a gift for teaching others. Those who’ve taken an art class, attended a private paint party, or even viewed her work know just how true those characterizations are. She herself claims, “I have always painted, it was naturally what I was going to do,” and it shows.
Before our busy season started, the rentals department held our very own private paint party at this eclectic studio along Oak Island. To say that it was just what the doctor ordered for our busy staff would be an understatement.
The night started by gathering all of the BYOB and finger food items, picking out our paint colors and getting an initial instruction from the artist herself. Under normal circumstances with one paint design, Missy walks her guests through the best techniques for the type of medium they are using. “My husband, Ron and I work side by side here…we provide one-on-one attention," explains Missy.
"Our goal is for you to be happy and have fun, but to also learn a little something.”
The night continued with a great selection of tunes playing over the speakers with an occasional sing along added to the mix. “For classes, we typically listen to Hipster Cocktail Radio or Billy Joel Radio,” Missy states. As we dove deeper into our paintings, Missy was quick to assist when we experienced a problem or had questions. After a couple of hours, we walked away with not only gorgeous pieces of artwork to display in our homes but also a feeling of relaxation and accomplishment.
Pescado Y Amor was born out of Missy and Ron’s love for Mexico, one another, the beach, life..and art..and we repeat – those loves show when you step foot inside the studio. They offer their guests the best and bring out the same in even the most novice of artists.
